I am delighted to share with you a quick introduction to the thesis project we are drafting with my colleagues Petronella Tyson and Li Zhe for the completation of the MSc in Strategic Leadership towards Sustainability in the Blekinge Institute of Technology, Karlskrona, Sweden. We are more or less in the middle of our research, with the research well clarified and fully immersed gathering data.

Our thesis builds upon an ongoing research, conducted by Prof. Tim McAloone from Danish Technical University (DTU), around how several companies (product and services), structured as a network (system), could co-develop together with and for the customer a value proposition/offering. From this scenario we assume that: (i) an organisation of organisations is created ad hoc with (ii) a shared purpose, the delivery of the value proposition in which all the stakeholders participate. To enhance this scenario we propose the integration of a sustainability strategy co-created by the stakeholders influencing and influenced by the business activity around the value proposition/offering.

As an hypothesis for gathering information we propose three phases for the sustainability strategy:

Phase I – Understanding the System

The aim of this phase is to research around the customer need that gives sense of existence to the network of stakeholders (NoS).

Ideally, stakeholders influencing and influenced by the business activity around the value proposition/offering ( not just companies), are invited to co-create a shared and broader understanding of the customer need.

Phase II – Defining Success

The aim of this phase is, with the broad understand of the need’s system, to co-create a Vision for how the need could be best satisfied.

Besides the satisfaction of the need, the compliance with the Principles of Sustainability from The Natural Step, a third criteria is proposed to measure success: the equitable (fair) distribution of benefits among the network of stakeholders.

Phase III – Strategic Guidelines

Besides the guidelines proposed by the FSSD, framework provided by our master program, we pretend to add guidelines on the selection of stakeholders and actions that will carry on the co-development of the value proposition. The ongoing research at DTU focus more specific on the co-development.

It is always nice to find models that give a name to mental structures that ones uses to face some situations. Across my journey to systems thinking I came to find the concept to define a system as holon. Coined by Arthur Koestler in his book The Gosth in the Machine (1967, p. 48) an holon (Greek: ὅλον, holon neuter form of ὅλος, holos ”whole” and the suffix “-on” that denotes “part) is something that is whole and part simultaneously, wikipedia dixit.

This adds a (obviated) perspective when considering any system to be designed. Because any system that we could be part of shaping will be always whole and part, and would argue also that when thinking in systems as holons, we should not to forget about the relationships between holons, horizontally and vertically. Therefore, whenever considering the activity of designing a system a useful perspective to concieve the system would be as whole, part and in relationship, each dimension understood as an object of design.

Holon; whole, part and in relationship.

* End of the post in English, goes on in Catalan

Fet servir per primera vegada per Arthur Koestler al seu llibre The Gosth in the Machine (1967, p. 48) un holón (Greek: ὅλον, holon forma neutre de ὅλος, holos ”tot” més el sufixe “-on” que denota “part”) es defineix com qualsevol cosa que es tot i part alhora, citant la wikipedia.

While exploring the topic of leadership and organisational change, and how both are influenced by systems thinking I came across to one of the most amazing books I ever read, the one by Fritjof Capra, The Hidden Connection: A Science for Sustainable living. His talent to bridge most contemporary scientific understanding of life to the world we live in represented an amazing source of knowledge for a better understanding of ecosystem design, one could say that even for western epistemology.

I used some of his digested knowledge to write an essay called Leadership as Distributed Initiative [99 Kb]. In it leadership is understood as a collective effort using always science-based parallelisms.

Back on track after a while, I will try to update some work done at the program

Thanks to the course of Engineering for a Sustainable Society we had a couple of weeks to research on some topic in pairs, and I rescued the Updateable Material Products concept and refine it with my colleague Olivier Mazimpaka.

The small piece of work plays around the design possibilities for the objects when placed in a Product-Service System. We have work with concepts like object as a process, object as analogical-digital interactive technic and asynchronous innovation.

You can download the Update-able Material <del>Products</del> Factors [210 Kb] handout. Slideshow was created also, you have it onwards.

Willing to hear your thoughts about it!

This post is meant to inaugurate my blog-life-time in Karlskrona, Sweden. I moved here to study the Master in Strategic Leadership towards Sustainability, and it’s been a month since we started, LOTS of amazing learning materials and people have nourished this time.

I will try to share the high-valuable insights as long as I digested, by the moment what comes first is the incredible ability in which the staff mix the Principles of Sustainability of the Natural Step with the role as change agent and how interconnected it appears to be.

Just a taste, this week we have had the luck to enjoy the presence of Martin Kalunga-Banda during a two days workshop. The tip, when facilitating creativity allow spaces for identity before brainstorming, how? Answering who I am, and what am I on Earth for?

[End of the post in English, goes on in Catalan]

–

It’s been almost two months since I wrote the last post. Lot’s of things happened, not all interesting from a ‘decos’ point of view. But I want to highlight three of them.

The lectures I gave at IED Barcelona and Eina, School of Design and Art about Sustainable Product Service System and their relation to design. The acceptance to study the master ’Strategic Leadership for Sustainable Innovation‘ of Blekinge Institute of Technology in Sweden on September, and reaffirmation that the change that we want for the world starts first in ourselves.

I have been involved since February in the creation of a company within the field of tourism. I got on board because of the people who was starting it and because my role there was developing my skills in design strategy, something I like and even I assume as a hobby. But something after all, despite I tried to embedded, that looks like will have no positive impact. So I decided to do not take part any more in the start up.

In front of the despotism of what we are seeing everyday in our societies, I feel even more responsible for every action I made, for every second I spend, for every energy I use. That’s why I think this last two month, besides a good experience in entrepreneurship, have been a good lesson of consequence and coherence.

The title of the post is a quote of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi

Last week I took part in the GSJ Barcelona, how cool it was!!

Good organization, great place, amazing people for a huge proposition! Design a service in near 48h with the same topic on cities arround nearly 60 countries!

It’s always a good exercise this lifetime-sharing experiencies with great people (thank you guys!) with a common aim, in this case design a service with the SUPERHEROES imaginary in mind.

We came up with a service called FRRFFF (the sound of the flying cape) which was designed to empower urban people to team up and act, kind a city activism platform. I leave you the slides below.

Some photos here

Trying to find interesting material for this blog, despite was such a fast prototype I would extract some conclusions.

Always try to build any initiative upon a truly need, or something real that have impact to humans.

Design for the habilities of people.

Design for good, design it well. Start bussines for good neither than for profit.

You are not a discoverer. http://www.movements.org/pages/about/

I attended this week to Design Thinking (DT) sessions organised by leading Design School Elisava. Furthermore than great time we shared with enormous professionals like Arne Van Oosterom from DesignThinker or Rich Radka from Claro Partners and all the partakers of the conferences and workshops, it helped my to clarify the positioning of System Design within a company.

You can find explanations of what Design Thinking is here, here or here, if you need it.

If DT tries, as said by Rich, to orientate the internal business uses historically focused on numbers, logistics and budgets, and add there user insights, emotions and needs, this change the way things are done in terms of product or design strategy.

So, when we talk about System Design, as what we meant is to orientate the company (or several in synergy) to a diverse way in understanding the deliverable of a good, in our case change the product to a use value, what we are doing is just add a sustainable business model, in this case PSS, to the existing methodology of Design Thinking.

This leads to influence almost all the stages of the construction of what a company does.

With this scenario many questions appear. Would accept a company to be drifted in almost most of his parts for an external agent? Under which situation? How does to be offered this opportunity to companies? Is this feasible, nowadays, for a non-start up company?

In conclusion, we do have an ally with DT.

____

It is starting to appears logical as well to share more objects. I already wrote some postsabout the misnamed-trend of sharing and how Product Service Systems (PSS) can help companies to adapt them to a feasible business model, in which basically we see new scenarios refereed to the ownership of the product and the interactivity of the stakeholders of the system. This usually makes increase the shared use or rental of the products we may be owning now.

And it’s precisely related to these last idea of owning less objects, I wanted to discuss.

The main aim of PSS is that products will be under the ownership of the company who instead of sell the product will provide unit functions of the product, the use value. Thus, the executive becomes the first concerned in offer this use value with everlasting, repairable, recyclable, reusable products within a quality standards. Hence, apart from dematerialise the economy and reduce the risk that materials flows give to the company, appears a new scenario for the design of this product.

What I am going to write it might be tagged under the Ecodesign discussion but I would like to stop in a specific concept that is related to EcoSystem Design. Because in case of technological material products ( a computer, or even a car) that can work within PSSs, we can accept that at a theoretical level we can divide a product in two parts: the communicative support or device which interact with the user and is driven by ergonomics, functionality, usability, user needs and so on, and the technological part that in a hidden level works to fulfil the expectations. These two parts of the technological material products are closely related and in most cases changes in one part involves direct changes in the other part, and viceversa. But is this always strictly needed? To a what extend have changed during the history the briefings that conforms the communicative support in the most of technological artefacts we use? What about the obsolescence of both parts, usually totally out of step? Then I ask:

- Towards the durability of products, the reduction of the pace and the material volume of the economy, and aligned with the PSS logic where the company owns the product and sell their use, could exist update-able material products?

- Could we apply the logic of ‘updating’ we already use for internet based products to material ones?

- Are we able to conceive and design self-systemic products that would accept future modifications that were not known in the first design process, avoiding Frankenstein objects? And goes this totally opposite to puristic design ethics that pose that good design is a whole where all aspects have been designed at once, and therefore, changes to a posteriori could leave obsolete or dysfunctional the first design?

- Could we imagine products that are designed for the best performance in terms of usability, ergonomics, functionality and more criteria of human scale for one side, and exchangeable ‘black boxes’ of technology that will adapt to these perdurable ‘communicative support’?

- What about the ‘open doors’ if we add the new technologies in 3D printing to this concept, will this reduce transportation and goods of production by the company, for example?
